Mammillaria formosa, commonly called owl eye cactus, is a globus clustering cactus plant in the family Cactaceae. This species of Mammillaria is native across Mexico. M. formosa stems are green but densely covered and obscured by short white spines and white fuzz on their areoles. The stems grow up to 6 inches in height and 1 to 2 inches in diameter, often clumping together at maturity. M. formosa blooms in spring to summer with diurnal cream yellow to pink flowers. This species is grown as an ornamental plant for its compact size and white ball shaped stems. Mammillaria formosa grows best in full sun to partial shade while sitting in well-draining soils. Water the plant adequately during summer and keep dry during winter as it is prone to rot. It is a drought-tolerant species and can tolerate a wide range of temperatures.
