Mammillaria mystax, commonly known as the powder puff cactus, is a cactus plant belonging to the Cactaceae family. M. mystax is native to northern Mexico where it is found growing in rocky dry soils. Mammillaria mystax is a small, globose cactus that typically grows up to 6 inches in height and 1 to 2 inches in diameter. The stem of the plant is green in color and is covered in short white spines. M. mystax blooms in the summer time with bright red flowers emerging from the apex that measure no more than a half inch in diameter. M. mystax is grown as an ornamental plant for its small size and showy flowers. Mammillaria mystax grows best in full sun to partial shade while sitting in well-draining soils. Water the plant adequately during summer and keep dry during winter as it is prone to rot. It is a drought-tolerant species and can tolerate a wide range of temperatures.
