Strombocactus disciformis is the only species of its genus in the cactus family, Cactaceae. Strombocactus disciformis is native to Mexico and is endangered in part due to poaching. It is a globos perennial plant with a flattened head and spiraling tubercles. The main stem has bluish green skin and grows up to 3.2 inches tall and 3.6 inches wide. Spines grow up to 0.8 inch long and are white with dark gray tips. S. disciformis is grown as an ornamental plant partially due to its large white or bright purple flowers that bloom during spring through summer. The plant does best in full to partial sun in well draining soil with little organic matter. Water sparingly during summer and do not water in winter for compact growth and the natural flatted top.
