Victorian English Copeland Transferware Charger Chinese Motif 19th Century
A large ceramic charger by Copeland is decorated with a blue transfer design of a Chinese double shou character and trigrams. I initially mistook it at a distance for being Chinese. The blue cobalt used is dark and rich. The glaze is thick and feels soft and smooth to the touch. The charger has a shallow rounded unglazed foot and a glazed base with three sets of three saggar marks. The base is marked with an impressed mark that reads COPELAND with a separate M nearby. There is also a transfer mark with the words Copeland and Date Spode. MEASUREMENTS 12 ¾” (32.4 cm) diameter x 1 7/8” (4.8 cm) tall. Weighs 2 lbs 9.8 oz (1190 g) CONDITION There are no chips, cracks, breaks or repairs. There are mistakes in the transfer, such as bleeding and misses. The glaze has significant crazing, the underside has some staining, and there is wear to the inside. There are kiln flaws, such as bumps and blue spots. A large English Victorian charger to add age and richness to the home.
