Found in Florence, called Gran Crema Caffè rather than an affogato at Vivoli since 1929. When I was living in Italy a couple of years ago, I made a coffee collection called “Black Water”. I photographed this piece for the collection but it didn’t make the cut. It wasn’t staying on the discard pile—I was waiting for its moment. For me, an affogato sits firmly categorised as a dessert rather than your morning cup of joe. To be fair, I don’t know if anything in Italy can be classified as average, or at least I have the ignorance to believe so. I believe in the magic, I believe in what I taste, and my god, I believe in the way in which good food, good drinks or a good combination of the both is served. It’s obvious, isn’t it? Italian coffee and Italian gelato–it would hardly be a bad match.
