Did you follow the pattern instructions for picking up button band stitches only to have it pull or sag out of shape? Why do some patterns tell you a total number of stitches to pick up and others tell you to pick up so many stitches for so many rows? Never fear, Nancy V will answer these and any other questions you may have about picking up stitches. There is a simple ratio that you can figure out for yourself, based on your knitting, that will help you pick up stitches like a pro. Working from a sample swatch (see below), we will pick up stitches along horizontal, vertical, and slanted edges. We will measure personal stitch to row gauge and use that to calculate how many stitches should be picked up for a neat, lay-flat edge. HOMEWORK (Required!!!!!) Using smooth, light colored worsted or DK weight yarn, and needles appropriate for that yarn, cast on 30 sti
