Be The Rock

This photo is from the southern tip of Mexico where millions of years ago great volcanos erupted, sending huge volcanic rocks the size of houses into the nearby Pacific Ocean. This mighty rock and the ocean tides to me are symbolic of the following story. There is a famous quote by Bruce Lee that starts with the words “You must be shapeless, formless, like water.” In essence he is saying that you must be able to adapt in order to overcome. I have found this to be sage advice over the years but recently my oldest son who has three children gave his younger brother who is about to start his own family this advice: “The secret to raising children is the opposite of being like water. They’re already like water, with their emotional swells, the ebbs and flows of their developmental oceans. You need to be strong like a rock that they can crash up against when they need to. Firm and consistent through high tides and low, fair weather and storms. Just be a rock that they can anchor their boat
