Reading Your Keyword Results
The Three Core Metrics
Reach Dog’s Keyword Research results can include:
- Search volume: measured demand attached to the term.
- CPC: cost-per-click context from advertising data.
- Competition: the available competition signal for the term.
These metrics describe the market around a keyword. They do not establish a universal rule for which term a merchant should choose.
Compare Terms Relative to the Catalog
Start with product fit. A term should accurately describe the product or the buyer need it serves. Then compare the market signals.
Ask:
- Is the term directly relevant to a product already carried?
- Is the volume direct, or inherited from a broader parent term?
- Is the CPC compatible with the merchant’s margin and campaign economics?
- How crowded is the term relative to the alternatives?
- Would the term be more useful in a title, visible content, FAQ, or campaign?
No Universal Threshold
A high-volume term can be too broad. A low-volume term can describe the right buyer and product precisely. A high CPC can indicate commercial attention without proving that the term will convert for this merchant.
Compare terms within the same product context and make the decision from relevance, economics, competition, and strategy together.
