Understanding Shared Keywords Between Products
What Shared Keywords Mean
Shared keywords are buyer or search terms connected to more than one product in the analysis. The overlap can show that products are positioned around the same demand, need, or product neighborhood.
Shared language does not prove that a product ranks for a term, that a competitor advertises on it, or that either product completed a sale.
Reading Overlap
Review:
- the shared term
- how each product serves the need
- important differences in audience, use, material, price, or benefit
- available volume, CPC, and competition attached to the keyword
- whether the products are substitutes, complements, or only loosely related
The amount of overlap is context, not a universal threshold for competition or cannibalization.
Using the Finding
Shared language can help a merchant:
- clarify how two products differ
- identify comparable products for market review
- find buyer language missing from an accurate listing
- inspect overlap within the merchant’s own catalog
- distinguish substitutes from products that belong in the same basket
Reach Dog does not use shared keywords to expose another advertiser’s private bids, spend, click-through rate, account performance, or sales data.
